The Ghosts of Jeju, an independent documentary film detailing the popular resistance to the naval base construction on Jeju Island, South Korea, will be shown at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, November 9, 7 p.m. This screening is free and open to the public. The filmmaker Regis Tremblay will be visiting that weekend and will hold a Q and A session after the film, facilitated by Korean Quarterly board/staff member Phil Lee. The film follows the emergence of a non-violent resistance movement to this South Korean government project, which is influenced strongly by the new "pivot to Asia" policy by the U.S. It also relates the story of the post-WWII massacre on this island by South Korean military, led by U.S. military, in response to what was then thought of as a Communist insurgency, now seen as simply a peasant rebellion. This history explains, in part, the indignation of the Jeju Island people about this military intrusion. This story is one of a people's resistance. Some of the protesters have been camped in front of the construction site daily for years. Christian peace activists, particularly the Catholic Church in Korea, have been leaders in this persistent witness for peace. Many high profile American peace activists have supported this effort as the issue has gained global attention. It is a story to a small group of people who are standing up to U.S. military expansion in Asia, and defending their traditional way of life, which will be wiped out by the installation of a large military base there. They are also protesting the environmental degradation that will result from the dredging of a rare soft coral reef there, and the endangerment of numerous marine animals that will result from the base construction. The film also discusses the irony of the South Korean government's pledge to preserve Jeju Island as an "island of peace" and its reversal of that policy when it pushed through the construction of a nuclear submarine military base shortly thereafter. See Korean Quarterly's fall issue for more on the making of this film. The trailer for the film is at the website: www.theghostsofjeju.net On Sunday, November 10, 2 p.m. there will be a second showing (free) of Ghosts of Jeju at the Parkway Theater, 4817 Chicago Ave. S., Minneapolis. These screenings are sponsored by the Veterans for Peace (Chapter 27). It is co-sponsored by: Korean Quarterly; the Institute for Advanced Study (University of Minnesota) the Anti-War Committee; the Korea Forum Committee; Minnesota Peace Action Coalition; Twin Cities Peace Campaign; and Women Against Military Madness. |
